Groundwater Management 8

About GMA 8

Groundwater Management Area 8 (GMA 8) is a large, state‑designated groundwater planning region in central and north‑central Texas where local groundwater districts jointly plan long‑term aquifer conditions called Desired Future Conditions (DFCs). It covers a broad swath from the Hill Country up through North Texas, including the Red River Groundwater Conservation District and several major and minor aquifers.

Purpose and legal role

  • GMA 8 is one of sixteen GMAs created under Texas Water Code Chapter 36 and HB 1763 to coordinate conservation, preservation, protection, recharge, and prevention of waste of groundwater.
  • Representatives from the groundwater conservation districts (GCDs) within GMA 8 meet regularly to set and update DFCs for all “relevant aquifers” at least once every five years.
